Advances in Cancer Diagnostics
نویسنده
چکیده
Malignant transformation of cells into cancer arises due to long term accumulation of genetic and epigenetic events. Early diagnosis of these transformations in cells can improve the prognosis of cancer cases. Cancer screening and surveillance methods include ultrasound, mammography, digital mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Other techniques such as immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization (FISH, CSH), PCR, RT-PCR (real timePCR), flow cytometry and microarray are used nowadays for diagnosis. Microarray technology is a new and efficient approach to extract data of biomedical relevance for a wide range of applications. In cancer research, it will provide high-throughput and valuable insights into differences in an individual’s tumor as compared with constitutional DNA, mRNA expression, and protein expression and activity. This review highlights the recent developments in cancer diagnostic technologies and describes the eventual use of these technologies for clinical and research applications.

Despite impressive scientific achievements over the past few decades, cancer is still a leading cause of death. One of the major reasons is that most cancer patients are diagnosed with advanced disease. This is clearly illustrated with ovarian cancer in which the overall 5-year survival rates are only 20-30%. Conversely, when ovarian cancer is detected early (stage 1), the 5-year survival rate ...
متن کاملNanomedicine – The role of newer drug delivery technologies in cancer
Nanotechnology has slowly but steadily revolutionized the diagnosis, imaging and treatment of cancer. Detecting cancer at earliest stages, locating the tumor at different areas in the body and specific delivery of the drugs to malignant cells including surgically inaccessible tumors are the core areas of medical and pharmaceutical research across the world. In this endeavour, Nanodevices have e...

Over the past few years, tissue microarray (TMA) technology has been established as a standard method for assessing the expression of proteins or genes across large sets of tissue specimens. It is being adopted increasingly among leading research institutions around the world and utilized in cancer research in parallel with the cDNA microarray technology. This article summarizes various aspects...
متن کاملRecent advances of microRNA-based molecular diagnostics to reduce false-positive lung cancer imaging.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. Advances in early detection crucial to enable timely curative surgery have been made in recent years. Cost-benefit profiles of lung cancer screening in smokers by low-dose computed tomography are still under evaluation. In particular, the high false-positive rates of low-dose computed tomography, together with the issue of overdiag...
